The authority to describe the physical world migrated — not because older frameworks failed entirely, but because this new one demonstrated an extraordinary ability to orient action within it.

The same methods that had proven so effective at answering how began, by habit rather than design, to be treated as candidates for answering more. In public discourse especially, the distinction between explanation and meaning softened. Predictive success was taken, implicitly, as a form of endorsement. Mastery suggested legitimacy. For the most part, this assumption went untested. The framework held. Science continued to do what it does best, and the question of meaning remained largely external to its practice. The arrangement was not formalised, but it functioned well enough to avoid scrutiny.

This is where the question of “why” belongs.
“Why” is not a request for more data. It is not a gap waiting to be filled by better models. It emerges from finitude: from the fact that time is limited, outcomes are uneven, and responsibility cannot be delegated without remainder. We ask “why” because we must choose, and because those choices bind us to one another.
Artificial intelligence does not ask “why” in this sense. It has no reason to. Purpose must be imposed upon it. Direction must be given. Value must be supplied from outside its operation. This is not a deficiency. It is simply a boundary — one that clarifies rather than diminishes the role of human judgement.
Seen this way, the arrival of AI does not hollow out meaning. It sharpens it. By extending our capacity to explain and generate outcomes, it forces a clearer separation between what can be optimised and what must be owned. Intelligence can be distributed. Responsibility cannot.
The temptation, when centrality weakens, is to search for a replacement — another position from which meaning might once again appear guaranteed. History suggests that this search is misplaced. Meaning does not survive by being anchored to a centre. It survives by being practiced.
What remains distinctive, then, is not supremacy, but accountability. Not uniqueness of ability, but the willingness to answer for what is done with it. As our tools grow more capable, the space for such responsibility does not shrink. It expands.
That expansion is uncomfortable. It offers no final reassurance. But it has accompanied every major decentring before. And it has proved, each time, to be enough.
VIII. Holding the Thread (Refined)
Periods of decentring are often remembered as intellectual breakthroughs. They are rarely experienced that way at the time. From within them, the sensation is closer to strain — the effort of continuing to speak, act, and decide while the reference points that once made those actions feel straightforward no longer quite hold.
History suggests that such moments do not end with replacement. There is no clean exchange of one centre for another. What follows instead is a redistribution: of authority, of responsibility, of meaning. Something that once sat quietly in the background moves into view and demands attention.
Faced with that demand, the temptation is to resolve it — to close the question, to restore certainty, to locate a new anchor capable of carrying the weight we have just felt slipping. Yet the recurring lesson of earlier shifts is less consoling: stability is not recovered by reinstating a centre, but by learning to operate without one.
Artificial intelligence belongs within this pattern. It is neither oracle nor adversary. It does not generate meaning, nor does it negate it. It extends our capacity to explain and to produce outcomes at a scale that loosens an assumption we had scarcely noticed we were holding — that explanation, intelligence, and human centrality would continue to coincide.
What matters, then, is not whether AI is embraced or resisted, regulated or celebrated. What matters is whether we remain attentive to the distinction between what can be optimised and what must be owned. Tools can be governed. Capabilities can be constrained. But responsibility cannot be delegated without remainder.
One way to see this clearly is to ask a small set of ordinary questions — not metaphysical ones, not theological ones, but questions that arise naturally wherever explanation meets consequence:
Why does this matter?
What should be done, given that it can be done?
Who remains responsible when the outcome is harmful, even if no error occurred?
These are not exotic questions. They accompany every serious human decision. They are asked in science, in medicine, in law, and in daily life. Yet they do not arise automatically from explanation, nor are they answered by optimisation alone.
Artificial intelligence does not ask these questions on its own. It has no reason to. The questions only appear where finitude, accountability, and choice intersect — where decisions must be lived with, not merely computed.
Holding the thread through periods of rapid change does not require restoring a lost centre. It requires staying present to this difference. When that attention is maintained, decentring does not become collapse. It becomes reconfiguration.
The centre is moving again.
Not away from us, but away from the places where we once expected it to reside.
What follows will depend less on what our tools can do than on our willingness to continue asking the questions they cannot — and to carry responsibility for the answers.
